VICTORIA'S SECRET, ANGELS OR DEMONS?
This week a great controversy arose around the famous Victoria Secret brand and we wanted to give our opinion. To put it in context in case you don't know what happened, Victoria Secret was a very famous brand, especially because once a year a parade was organized in which very hegemonic models paraded, skinny, tall, with wings as if they were angels, for example. Those famous Victoria Secret angels.
It was the event of the year, there were star singers who played there while the models paraded, they signed the entire Backstage, everyone saw it, we saw it, our sisters, our mothers, we felt that all women who are over 15 years old saw it. . In short, it was a super event and in recent years with the growth of the body positivity movement they began to draw attention to a lot of brands that were not having inclusion on their catwalks and one of those affected was Victoria Secret, obviously well and in At the time they didn't know how to work on it as a brand so they decided to cancel the Victoria Secret catwalks.
A few years later the Victoria's Secret shows came back, and they came back changed and this is where the controversy begins, this show came back but in a different way, they displaced all the old Victoria Secret Angels and put a lot of new models with different bodies, different ethnicities, different colors but they also changed the entire aesthetic of the show, that is, it is no longer a show, it is like a style of film or recording or something like that, there are no more classic angel wings. They changed the whole aesthetic and vibe of the show. There are two opinions: some like this show better, which is more inclusive, and others prefer the classic, that's what everyone is saying and we're going to give ours.
Maybe our opinion is not the most accurate but it is sincere. As a first point for us, it is a very forced inclusion, it is very noticeable when a brand is naturally inclusive and places models, skinny, fat, medium-sized models, tall or short, of different colors, who go down the same catwalk in a way " "normal", what we mean by forced inclusion is that Victoria Secret is putting a lot of emphasis on showing that not all of its models are hegemonic, they want to highlight that there are women parading with bodies different from what they are always used to, it is great that they put everything type of bodies on the catwalk but by doing it so forced we realize that they are not doing it for the right reason and that they have taken out all the classic Victoria Secret models. It also shows us that, that is, it is very forced, it is like, yes, look, we displace everyone the hegemonic ones and we put everything that you said that it was okay that they have different bodies and all that, it's like Yes well but let's also be honest a hegemonic body is also "normal" because I go to walk down the street and they are skinny and they are tall , it seems as if Victoria Secret stereotypes could not share a parade with non-hegemonic people. The second point is the fact that they have changed the entire aesthetic of the show, it shows the mind inside all the people who work in Victoria and those who made the change. because they gave models with different bodies different colors, but they also modified the entire aesthetics of the show and this shows the executives' mind when putting all this together, and that for them if you are not hegemonic you are no longer worthy of being an angel of Victoria Secret, you are no longer aesthetic, you are no longer ethereal, and if they put all the models "normal" and "different" but eliminated everything Mystical from the show, a better strategy would have been to keep what works well, that is the parade. Backstage, the wings, the outfits that were incredibly beautiful that you realize took a long time to make and that were perfectly molded to the model's body and to grab and insert these people with different bodies or different colors on that same catwalk with those same conditions, but they took out all the beauty of the show as if these new models did not deserve the beauty of the show that existed before.
Well this is our controversial opinion about what happened with Victoria Secret, we hope to read them and know what you think. Kisses!
