The Great Spider-Man Meeting at the Obelisk
The Great Spider-Man Meeting at the Obelisk
On Sunday afternoon, October 29, 2023, people passing through the center of the city of Buenos Aires were surprised to see hundreds of individuals dressed as Spider-Man. Their goal was to beat the world record for the largest concentration of people in a single place dressed as characters from the Marvel universe. Malaysia had the previous record, with 685 individuals dressed as Spider-man, that meeting was in a cinema during the premiere of the latest film in the franchise.
Uki Deane, an Instagram influencer who has more than 400,000 followers, was the one who promoted the call and sought to bring together “the largest number of fans dressed as Spider-Man in the Obelisk” with the aim of surpassing the world record of people characterized as the superhero in the same place.
The Uki promoted the event on social networks to meet that same afternoon, at 5 p.m., in the vicinity of the Buenos Aires Obelisk dressed as Spider-Man. The initiative, known as “Spiderverse Argentina”, also had a charitable purpose, since attendees were asked to bring non-perishable food, which would later be donated to community kitchens.
Malaysia holds the record with 685 people dressed as Spider-Man, but Uki Deane's wish was to gather more than 1,000 people. On his social media, Deane emphasized that “everyone is invited to join, the most important thing is to bring something related to Spider-Man. You can improvise a mask or even paint your face if you want!" Above all, he encouraged attendees to bring non-perishable food to collaborate with local soup kitchens.
Deane explained that a lawyer had verified the signatures and names of all the participants, and that the Guinness Awards organization would later certify this documentation. What started as an outlandish idea transformed into a multitude of participants. Deane expressed: “Individuals came from all corners of the country, from Uruguay to Misiones. It's amazing"
The call on social networks had the support of the Argentine national team and Manchester City footballer, Julián Álvarez, whose nickname is "The Spider." Álvarez responded to influencer Deane's message with emojis of support, which was celebrated by thousands of users.
According to Uki Deane, the organizer of the event, the figure was greatly exceeded. In his words: “We have surpassed the record by far; We are already more than 2000 people.”
For us it is a good proposal on the part of Uki Deane to call on fans dressed as Spider-man to break a world record and, at the same time, help community kitchens, which seems super remarkable and positive to us. The fact that it far surpassed Malaysia's previous record of over 2,000 participants is impressive and demonstrates the enthusiasm and passion of Marvel fans in Argentina. Furthermore, the solidarity of collecting non-perishable food for those who need it most is a valuable gesture.
